The Asian Food Festival & Thrivera: FOOD for GOOD

We’re really excited to partner up with the Asian Food Festival (on 5/18 & 5/19) to be held at the Banks in downtown Cincinnati. Thrivera will be featuring some awesome stories about Asian Food and Culture through the next few weeks leading up to the event. Funds raised will go towards Thrivera’s efforts. An Artist in Search for the Perfect Garden

This summer, I was on vacation in the deep south when I ran into an artist from Thailand traveling the world in search for a simple garden to paint. It was one of those meetings that make you wonder, “how did your journey bring you here of all places?” I had a chance to interview him for our Thrivera project.

Scaling Walls for Education

Next week, we’re embarking on our latest fundraising campaign: “Scaling Walls for Education.” Every year, thousands of kids across the country will face walls that prevent them from completing a proper education and reaching their goals. Back in my hometown of Cincinnati, 1 out of every 5 kids will never finish high school. If this wasn’t bad enough, in third world countries, as many as 3 out of 5 kids will never finish high school because of extreme poverty and many are driven into forced labor.

We really want our kids to thrive by keeping them in school, and giving them an opportunity to last a lifetime. With our video storytelling workshop, we give them a voice to discover their own story through self-produced documentary films. Whether they are from the projects of the inner city suffering from violence, or from the remote farming villages of the 3rd world. We want to hear and see their videos to inspire a generation.

That’s why we’re Scaling Walls for Education, starting with the biggest wall ever built… the Great Wall of China. The wall was built over 1200 years ago and spans close to 3,900 miles long. So what better wall to scale than this one. We’ll climb one of the steepest & most picturesque sections of the great wall and bring footage for you to see.

Partnering with the Academy of World Languages

We’ve had an amazing April so far, as we kicked off the Spring with our partner school, the Academy of World Languages (AWL), a Cincinnati Public School. They’re a unique school serving an important segment of families from Cincinnati’s urban neighborhoods, including refugees, immigrants, and foreign language students. Our first workshop has kids from a variety of countries: Senegal, Burundi, Ghana, Nepal, Philippines, US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, & Tanzania. I’m thrilled to serve such a diverse & international population who have so many experiences to draw from for their storytelling journey.

I was just floored, when I met a student from the Philippines who coincidentally is from the same town as my family. In fact, she lived in the same neighborhood as our partner school in the Philippines. It only confirmed that the AWL is a perfect fit with Thrivera’s international vision, and we are honored to serve alongside them.

We even got a chance to interview some of the parents of students who attend the school to understand their experience in uprooting their families to come to Cincinnati. We’ll be posting a series of video stories called “2nd Chances,” so you can see first hand what having a school like this here means to them as they work to replant their families here. Here’s the first installment.
